Update from Ben

by Angela Nelson

Posted 12/04/2018 12:30:44

My name is Ben Higgins, Ive just turned 17 and I’m a track and field athlete. My main events are 400m Hurdles and 400m. I am really honoured and grateful to have the support of the Nigel Harris Sports Foundation behind me this season, it will be such a help for me.
Today I competed at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield in my first indoor competition of the season. It was also my first one as an U20 having just moved up from U17 age group. I was really pleased with how well my 60mH race went over the higher U20 hurdles, I also ran a solid time in 60m flat and got a pb in 600m! It was great to be back on the track and the EIS is such a nice venue - I really enjoyed the day!
For now it’s back to hard winter training for the next month until my next competition in January.

Introduction to Ben

by Angela Nelson

Posted 12/04/2018 12:28:00

For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Ben Higgins, i am 16 and I am a Midlands based young athlete. My main event is 400m Hurdles but I also do sprint hurdling and flat sprints from 100-400m and am currently ranked in the top 10 for all 7 disciplines that i compete in.

I attend college now having recently sat my GCSEs and i am studying a level 3 course in Sports Science with the hope of going on to attend Loughborough University to continue my studies in sport and my passion as a member of their athletics team which is the best athletics university team in the UK. I regularly compete at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham both indoors and outdoors as well as other tracks in the midlands including Solihll, Tipton, Coventry, Nuneaton to name a few.

I currently train 5 days a week in my spare time and due to where we and the lack of athletics training facilities this involves a 60 mile round trip across the countryside each time I go training which turns a 2 hour training session into a 4+ hour trip, this also is a massive expense over the course of the year in fuel costs alone and thats without adding on travelling up and down the country for competitions most weekends between January and September. I dedicate pretty much all my spare time to my athletics and am 100% committed to achieving what i believe i am capable of.

Last year I medaled at every National level championship and earned my first England vest representing England Schools and the Home Nations Schools International in 400M Hurdles and went on to win and become the Home Nations Champion. This year i have also Medaled at almost every National championship (i missed out on the medals at English Schools this year coming 4th as i was carrying a hamstring injury) and also got my second England vest representing England u18”s at the welsh international where i won the u18 400m event. As well as success on a national level i have been county and midland Champion in multiple disciplines for the last few years as well.

I am really really lucky and have the most supportive parents you could wish for who literally live and breathe my athletics too, it takes over all our lives not just mine and I’m really grateful for their support emotionally, practically and of course financially too but as time goes on i have to start becoming a bit more independent in all this areas.

I have fond memories of Nigel from our holidays together in Turkey, I remember him talking to me about sport quite a lot as even at the age of 6 or 7 i was obsessed with running everywhere!! He also taught me a few self defence moves too!!
